Cheboygan County’s village of Aloha was settled in 1903 as a lumber community by James P. Patterson. He had visited Hawaii and he liked the peacefulness there, so he decided to name his new village Aloha.
The area had another name before that. There was a post office in the area and it was called Ball. The post office was located in a house on the east side of Mullett Lake, on what is now Pioneer Road. A family named Ball owned the building. They were probably farmers. The post office was established in 1883 and Nelson H. Ball was the first postmaster. The Ball Post Office was discontinued in 1890 and mail went to Cheboygan until 1903, when the Aloha Post Office was established.
The building that the post office had been in was interesting, for it was about 104 feet long. Upstairs there were six bedrooms, each about 10 by 10 feet. A barn, with stalls, was built onto the house. The house had been used as a halfway house, where people could break their trips. Travelers could rent rooms and put their horses up for the night. Mullett Lake boat travelers could also stay there.
A sawmill was operated at Aloha. Later there was also a logging railroad spur below the hill.
Now Claud Crusoe purchased area property, and he began to develop Pioneer Ranch. His brother, Lewis, was operating a ranch, called Golden River Ranch, on the roadway into Aloha Village. The Crusoes remain a leading family in the area. The Detroit and Mackinaw Railroad was built and Aloha State Park, right beside the village, brought both visitors and families who stayed.
Today, the area is very busy and it possesses an easy access to the Inland Water Route, where people can put their boats in and take a long, lax day crossing almost to Lake Michigan. lndeed, Aloha Village is a great asset to Cheboygan County and to Aloha Township.
